Ross Geller and Divorce

Ross Geller and Rachel Green from Friends are among one of the most well-known television couples of all time. Before and after their famous on-again, off-again duo got together; Ross was in several other serious relationships. He was married and divorced multiple times across the run of the series.

Below is everything you would ever need to know about Ross’s brief marriages, wife by wife:

1. Ross’s First Divorce: Carol Willick

The initial episode of the series introduces the audience to Ross’s first ex-wife, Carol. While married to Ross, she had met a woman named Susan Bunch at the gym, and the two of them fell in love. Carol then left Ross for Susan.

However, after the two separated, she found out she was pregnant. The three decide to parent together. Although Ross is not fond of Susan, they have a mostly healthy and balanced relationship throughout the series. When she and Susan married, Ross even walked Carol down the aisle.

2. Ross’s Second Divorce: Emily Waltham

In season 4, Ross meets Emily; a British lady Rachel accidentally sets him up with. Despite a rough first impression, Ross and Emily clicked and wound up investing a weekend break in Vermont together after their very first date. After that, their relationship progressed quickly (and spontaneously). Ross asked Emily to move in with him— which promptly turned into a marriage proposal because he didn’t want a long-distance relationship.

The two planned a wedding event in London, with everyone (including Rachel) invited. At first, Rachel stayed back in New York with Phoebe, but after Rachel realized that she had feelings for Ross, she hopped on an airplane to London and showed up at the wedding. A wedding that turned out to be a disaster – with Ross saying Rachel’s name instead of Emily’s at the church. Saying, “I, Ross, take thee Rachel” instead of “I, Ross, take thee Emily” during his vows.

Still, even after that, Emily was willing to forgive Ross. That is until she sees him nearly boarding an airplane to their honeymoon location in Greece with Rachel by his side.

Despite many efforts to win Emily back over, Emily and Ross did eventually get divorced.

3. Ross’s Third Divorce: Rachel Green

Will-they-won’t-they couple Rachel and Ross shocked audiences in season 6 when they got married in Vegas. After this drunken marriage, Ross is hesitant to get divorced as it would be his 3rd divorce. His plan to avoid this divorce is to simply tell Rachel that he had the marriage annulled. That isn’t true, though, so Ross and Rachel remained married without her knowledge for several episodes.

Rachel discovers this, and it ends just how you might expect:

They get divorced.

Ross Geller and Rachel Green did get back with each other at the end of the series. While they don’t get married for a second time during the show’s run, Joey alludes to them being married during the spin-off program, Joey, which no one watched.
